Vrede en Lust History & Location
Located halfway between Franschhoek and Paarl around 45 minutes’ drive from Cape Town, Vrede en Lust is nestled at the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain in South Africa’s most celebrated wine valley, Franschhoek.
The history of the farm dates back to 1688, when 66 hectares of land was allocated to Flemish merchant Jacques de Savoye, who had fled Europe due to religious persecution. It is believed that the first Sunday trading in the Cape colony took place here, due to the first Protestant church having been built on the estate. Since then, Vrede en Lust has had various owners, however notably has always been a wine farm, with current vineyards reflecting the plantings of 1745.
In 1996 a brand-new era beckoned for Vrede en Lust, when the Buys family became the new owners. With a vision of resurrection, Buys embarked on a mission to restore all the old buildings, returning them to their original historic splendour. The estate now also boasts a modern 750-ton wine cellar, bustling tasting room, 100 hectares of vineyards, Lust Bistro & Bakery, a 21 room accommodation and conference facility as well as a historic wedding venue with beautiful gardens.

Wine Tasting: open daily, 10am-5pm (last tasting 4.30pm).
Lust Bistro and Bakery: open Mon to Sat 7.30am-5pm, plus Sun & Public Holidays 8am-4pm.

We are open on all public holidays except Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. On the 24 Dec and 31 Dec we are open 10am-3pm. All times, prices and facilities listed are subject to change. Vrede en Lust Wine Tasting
We offer two hosted wine tasting experiences, plus two food and wine pairing options with cheese or Lindt chocolate. Our professional and knowledgeable tasting ambassadors, better known as the Red Ladies, will guide you through our range of wines whilst you enjoy panoramic views of the Simonsberg Paarl mountains.
Wine Tasting Prices
Our Premium Tasting includes 6 red, white or seasonal wine options, for R80pp. Our Flagship Tasting includes 5 of our named wines (Barrique, Kogelberg Chenin Blanc, Pinot Noir and Boet Erasmus) for R100pp.
We also offer a 5 Dalewood Cheese Pairing with 5 wines or a chocolate Lindt Excellence Pairing with 5 wines for R150pp. Finally our Tapas & Wine Pairing costs R300pp. Pre booking is essential for these food pairing options.
Please note unfortunately tastings cannot be shared. We can accommodate large groups up to 26 people, however not during December, or weekends between 1 Oct to 31 May. Large groups tastings should be pre-booked.
Vrede en Lust Restaurants
Lust Bistro & Bakery is open for early breakfast, lunch and everything else in between, offering honest, abundant and delicious food with an emphasis on simplicity and seasonal ingredients. Décor is modern and earthy – think industrial loft meets farmhouse kitchen. We also have a safe outdoor kiddies play area, located next to our beautiful gardens.
Menus & Pricing
Choose from the à la carte menu, daily blackboard specials or pick up something fresh from the bakery counter to take home. Sample items may include options such as build your own Traditional Farm Cooked Breakfasts, Eggs Benedict and Blueberry Crumpets. Lunch items range from salads and pastas, to pizzas and fishcakes. Lunch mains from R80pp. A kids’ menu and a wide range of soft drinks, beers and coffees are available.

Vrede en Lust is surrounded by vineyards and the spectacular backdrop of the Simonsberg mountains. We offer guests a range of accommodation options from Luxury Vineyard Rooms, Cottages and the Manor House.

Vrede en Lust’s 10 Luxury Vineyard Rooms boast wonderful views over the vineyard and sleep 2. Our 3 Cottages feature 2 bedrooms each, suitable for up to 4 guests per cottage. The superb historic Manor House accommodates up to 8 guests in 4 bedrooms and features a full kitchen, reception rooms, gardens and a pool. Please refer to www.vnl.co.za/accommodation/.
The Residence is an elegant and iconic 6 bedroom contemporary villa sleeping 12 guests, set in 3 hectares with extensive indoor and outdoor amenities. Independently run, please refer to www.vnl.estate/ for more information.
Pricing
Luxury Vineyard Rooms are priced from R2350 per room for 2 guests, Cottages are priced from R4,830 for 4 guests and The Manor House is priced from R24,000 for 8 guests. Rates include breakfast and are based on low season (winter). Single room prices are available for Luxury Vineyard Rooms. Please refer to the website for specials and rates for other seasons.
