Thelema History & Location
Welcome to Thelema Mountain Vineyards, a family-owned and managed wine estate located at the top of the Helshoogte Pass in Stellenbosch, part of the spectacular Simonsberg Mountain range.
In 1983 Gyles Webb left his accounting career to become a winemaker and purchased Thelema – here was the beginning of a family legacy. The Manor House was carefully restored and the first wines under the Thelema label were released in 1988. By the mid 90’s, Thelema’s wines sold out within a month after release, making it one of the most sought-after wine estates in South Africa.
As Thelema in Stellenbosch continued to flourish, Gyles embarked on a search for an additional property in order to establish a second vineyard. In 2002, the Webb family purchased an idyllic farm with an undulating landscape in the cooler Elgin region, creating ideal grape growing conditions. Thus both the Thelema and Sutherland wine ranges were born.

Thelema Wine Tasting
All Thelema and Sutherland wines are vegetarian and vegan friendly. Our Thelema range is an expression of Stellenbosch, through authority and rich tradition. Our high altitude and the rich red soils are ideal for premium quality wine grape production and we have firmly entrenched ourselves as one of the leaders in Cabernet Sauvignon.
Our Sutherland range is a demonstration of Elgin’s cool-climate serenity. Located 70 kilometres southeast of Cape Town in the Overberg region, the Elgin Valley is uniquely set on a high plateau surrounded by four mountain ranges making for ideal cool climate winemaking conditions.
Sit down tastings are offered both inside and outside, weather permitting. The Thelema Tasting Room has large glass windows, looking onto our vines with the Drakenstein mountain range as a backdrop. We also have viewpoints of our cellar and barrel cellar. Should you wish to sit outside in summer, pre-booking is strongly recommended.
Wine Tasting Prices
Our tasting fee is R100pp, including 6 wines from a choice of 8. Pre-booking is advised.
Thelema Restaurants
There is no restaurant or food offerings at Thelema, however a number of wine farm restaurants and the town of Stellenbosch are within easy reach by car.
Thelema Tours & Activities
Currently no tours of the vineyard or cellar are possible at Thelema.
