Spookfontein Wines

In Their Words
Spookfontein History & Location
Spookfontein is a boutique wine estate in the scenic Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, 15 minutes’ drive from the coastal town of Hermanus. With origins dating back to 1847, the farm is an indigenous fynbos heaven, with a mere 14 hectares under vine and olive trees growing stoically on the road towards our magnificent mountaintop cellar.
The name ‘Spook’ (Dutch for ‘ghost’) derives from the legend that one can discern a “spirit” within the swirls of our flowing farm spring. Perhaps it was this mystical allure that called the Davis family to this farmland two decades ago? Or perhaps it was the sheer beauty of its views and promise of award-winning wines?
Thanks to the Davis family and the many talented hands that collaborated with them, Spookfontein now stands an illustrious boutique wine farm. We offer a renowned restaurant and traditionally-inspired accommodation for an authentic Hemel-en-Aarde getaway.

Spookfontein Wine Tasting
Spookfontein offers aficionados a delectable variety of robust wines, grown from rocky soil and nurtured by Walker Bay’s timeless cold sea air, blown in by the Cape Doctor on summer evenings. Wine lovers can either sit in the restaurant overlooking breathtaking scenery, stand at our tasting bar for a more interactive experience or relax in our cellar tasting room.
Our phenomenal cellar and new tasting/function venue was designed by Douglas Carr of Ghostfountain Design. Constructed from natural materials, it overlooks the upper section of the valley. Curved and carefully designed, it does not intrude on nature but rather embraces it, with large windows offering visitors amazing views of vineyard, mountain and farm life.
