Skilpadvlei History & Location
Situated just 10 mins drive from historic Stellenbosch, Skilpadvlei derives its charming name from the legendary colony of tortoises that were found in the vlei in the 1800s (skilpad meaning tortoise in Afrikaans, vlei loosely translating as a small lake or pond).
The 78 hectare farm has been in the hands of the Joubert family since 1917. Today, fourth generation Willie Joubert upholds the proud family tradition of harnessing the rich potential of the land with a dedicated commitment to quality.
Our facilities include a tasting room, relaxed farm-style restaurant, gift shop, an inside/outside play area for kids, beautiful wedding and conference venues plus country style accommodation with views of the farm and mountains. We are a versatile farm, fast becoming one of the most popular family destinations on the Stellenbosch wine route!

Wine Tasting: open Mon to Sat 10am-4.30pm & Sun 10am-3.30pm.
Wine Pairing Options: available daily 10am-4pm (pre-book 24 hours in advance).
Restaurant: open Mon to Sat 7am-9pm & Sun 7am-5pm.

Skilpadvlei Wine Tasting
Try our range of easy drinking and enjoyable wines, which include a Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Merlot and our Skilpadvlei ML Joubert red blend. We also offer a popular Cheesecake Pairing with or without wine, plus a Kiddies Pairing (pre-booking 24 hours in advance required). Indoor and outdoor seating is available.
Wine Tasting Prices
Wine Tasting costs R40pp for 4 wines, alternatively we have a Wine & Cheesecake Pairing including 4 wines and 4 mini cheesecakes for R100pp. A Non-Alcoholic Cheesecake Pairing alternative is available for R80pp. Our Kiddies Sweetie Tasting costs from R55 per child. These are both available daily from 10am to 4pm and must be booked 24 hours in advance.
Skilpadvlei Restaurants
Nestled between the vineyards, Skilpadvlei Restaurant is renowned for its relaxed atmosphere and breathtaking views of the Stellenbosch Hills and surrounding mountains. Bring the kids along and let them explore our in-and-outside play area. Seating is available outside on the veranda or inside by the fireplace.
Menus & Pricing
Skilpadvlei Restaurant offers an extensive menu whether it’s breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast options include Eggs Benedict, Avo & Hummus on Toast, plus omelettes and French Toast. From lunch onwards, we have salads, steaks, wood-fired pizzas, burgers, curries and flame grilled ribs – plus desserts. A kid’s menu is also available. Main courses from R105pp.
Skilpadvlei Tours & Activities
Skilpadvlei do not currently offer scheduled cellar or farm tours.
With two venue spaces, beautiful gardens and picturesque views, Skilpadvlei is an excellent choice for weddings, functions and events. The charming ML Joubert Hall can accommodate between 40 and 180 guests whilst the Skilpaddop Room offers a more intimate setting for smaller groups. Catering options are available. Please contact the farm for more information.
Skilpadvlei Accommodation
Skilpadvlei offers a relaxing stay in the Manor House or self-catering Cottages. The surrounding vineyards and landscape are the natural habitat of various bird species and guests are welcome to hike through the vineyards to enjoy the views.
The 11 guest rooms at the Manor House are split into 9 Standard Rooms and 2 Deluxe Rooms. These feature en-suite facilities, some with shower only. Deluxe Rooms feature a shower and bath. All rooms include breakfast. The 7 self-catering Cottages vary in size and sleep up to 6 guests each. Facilities include a kitchenette or full kitchen, living room, braai (BBQ), plus a patio and access to a communal pool. These lie close to the farm’s dam, which also offers black bass and trout fishing.
Pricing
A Standard Room at The Manor House is priced from R1650 per room per night, based on 2 adults including breakfast. Deluxe Rooms from R2050 per room per night.
The 1 Bed / 1 Bath Cottage is priced from R1550 per night based on 2 sharing, on a self-catering basis. The 2 Bed / 2 Bath Cottage is priced from R2700 per night based on 4 sharing. The 3 Bed / 2 Bath from R3550, based on 6 sharing. Please note there is a minimum 2 night stay over weekends.
All rates based on low season (winter).
