In Their Words

Rupert & Rothschild History & Location

At the foot of the spectacular Simonsberg mountain in the Franschhoek Valley lies the historic French Huguenot farm Fredericksburg, established in the year 1690 and now home to Rupert & Rothschild.

The South African Rupert family, with a passion for producing world-class wine, own three other wine estates in the Franschhoek Valley: La Motte Wine Estate, L’Ormarins Wine Estate and Anthonij Rupert Wyne. The French Rothschild family, whose passion for wine began in 1868, now boast an extensive wine portfolio including vineyards in France, Spain, Argentina and New Zealand.

The Rupert & Rothschild partnership was formed in 1997 by the late Dr Anton Rupert and the late Baron Edmond de Rothschild. Their vision and guiding principles were later carried forward by their families, who continue to share and grow this prestigious partnership in wine production.

At Rupert & Rothschild you can expect superb wine tastings from our global wine ranges in the elegant Tasting Centre, plus a memorable fine dining experience in our restaurant, situated just over 10 minutes drive from the centre of Franschhoek.

Rupert & Rothschild Wine Tasting

The tranquil surroundings of the Estate lends itself to the interior of our Tasting Centre, which is inspired by the South African-French influence and understated elegance of the Rupert & Rothschild brand. Custom made French oak furniture complements the natural interior, with contemporary artworks sourced from the Rupert Art Museum in Stellenbosch.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of tastings, from fine wines and champagne to extra virgin olive oil and cheeses – produced both here in Franschhoek and imported from the exclusive Rothschild properties across France, Argentina and New Zealand.
