Idiom History & Location

Idiom is an award-winning wine estate in the heart of the Helderberg range, just over 30 minutes south of Stellenbosch close to False Bay. This southernmost part of the Stellenbosch wine region provides the perfect climatic conditions for the incredible range of Idiom wines. A celebration of terroir, unusual varietals and masterful blends, Idiom is so-called because it is home to the Cape expression of so many European classics. The Cape Idiom, if you will.

The Estate was the vision of Alberto and Valerie Bottega. Alberto was born in Italy and emigrated with his family to Cape Town as a child. The Bottega family are hugely proud of their Italian heritage and their decision to plant Italian varietals here in 1999 (as part of their diversified portfolio of grapes) is a celebration of this heritage.

Idiom is well known for its big, bold blends which have been celebrated in various competitions including repeatedly winning the Top 5 Cape Blend in South Africa and the national trophy at Michelangelo for the best Bordeaux-style blend.

Book a signature wine tasting or a table where you can enjoy a fine dining experience, soaking up dramatic 360-degree views of the False Bay Peninsula, a rugged mountain backdrop and picturesque sweeping vineyards of the Cape.

Idiom Wine Tasting

The Idiom range consists of 18 different varietals and provides a unique and direct comparison between the famous French wines of Bordeaux and the Rhone, Tuscany and Piedmont, but expressed in the Cape terroir.
