In Their Words

Clos Malverne History & Location

Shrouded in the misty veils of the Devon Valley just 6 kms north of Stellenbosch, Clos Malverne sits on 27 serene hectares. Here, traditional handcrafted wines using open fermenters and basket presses are made in the most natural way possible.

Seymour Pritchard bought the then 10 hectare farm, ‘Malvern Heights’, in 1969 from Colonel JW Billingham, who had named the farm after the rolling hills around Malvern in his native England. When winemaking came into Seymour’s sights in the mid-1980’s, France was still the epicentre of the wine universe. He then added some “French Flair” to the name and changed it to Clos Malverne, due to the homestead on the farm being reminiscent of a Clos in France.

Prior to 1985, Clos Malverne had been supplying its wine grapes to Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery for a number of years however it was only in 1986 that the first of Clos Malverne’s vintages were produced under its own label. During the 1990s, the estate increased its vineyard plantations and in 1995 Clos Malverne was one of the very first wineries to produce a classic Cape Blend.

Clos Malverne is truly a family affair, with a vision and commitment to the handcrafting of excellent wines. Visit our acclaimed restaurant with its spectacular view, be pampered in our spa, stay overnight in our luxury rooms or our self-catering guest cottage.

Clos Malverne Wine Tasting

The Devon Valley microclimate is the key to the quality of the grapes. Although the valley is shallow, it acts as a natural receptacle for the mists that linger around Stellenbosch in the early morning hours of summer. The valley is cooler than surrounding areas, significantly lengthening the ripening season, resulting in grapes of ideal ripeness. We have a combined 23 hectares under vine including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinotage.

Wine tasting is offered in our stylish Tasting Room/Restaurant. A tasting can be enjoyed prior to lunch, or we offer a cheese platter on request, should you wish to enjoy a light meal with you tasting.

Wine Tasting Prices

A standalone wine tasting in our restaurant/tasting room costs R75 for 4 wines or R100 for 6 wines.

At Clos Malverne we’re also all about exciting food and wine combinations and we were the first wine estate in Stellenbosch to offer a unique tasting experience in the form of our Ice Cream & Wine Pairing. It’s since become one of our signature pairings with seasonal, hand-made delicacies. Priced from R130pp including 4 wines (pre-booking essential).
