Buitenverwachting History & Location
Meaning ‘Beyond Expectation’, Buitenverwachting is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms and is set on the slopes of the magnificent Constantiaberg, just 25 mins from the centre of Cape Town.
Originally forming part of the historic ‘Constantia Estate’ founded by Governor Simon van der Stel, Buitenverwachting flourished as a wine farm after 90,000 vines were planted in 1825. After changing hands several times, it was finally purchased by the Mueller family in 1980 who have since lovingly restored it to its former glory.
Whilst specialising in Sauvignon Blanc, visitors to Buitenverwachting can also sample the estate’s other acclaimed white and red varietals in the tasting room or on the expansive lawn, in summer. The welcoming coffee shop is a popular spot for breakfast, while fine dining is the order of the day in the acclaimed restaurant, beyond.
Buitenverwachting Operating Hours
Wine Tasting: open Mon to Sat 10am-4pm (kitchen closes 3pm on Sat).
Beyond Restaurant: open Wed to Sun 12pm-2.30pm & Wed to Sat only for dinner 6pm-9pm.
Coffee BloC: open Mon to Sat 8am-4pm (kitchen closes 3pm).
The STUDIO Gift Shop: open Mon to Fri 9am-5pm.

Buitenverwachting Wine Tasting
The slow ripening climatic conditions with cold nights and modest day time temperatures translate into fresh, crisp and full bodied wines. Specialising in Sauvignon Blanc, the Constantia climate allows our winemaker and viticulturist to ripen out all the under-ripe green flavours.
The Wine Tasting experience is housed in the historic yet casual wine cellar, with a traditional thatched roof, white washed walls and leather couches. Outside, the stone tiled terrace overlooks the expansive lawn, where many visitors linger for hours with a bottle of wine and tasting platter picnic.
Wine Tasting Prices
Wines are offered for tasting at a fee of R70pp for 5, with a selection to choose from (glasses and bottles also available).
Food platters include a Cheese Board for 2 (R180), a Snack Board for 2 (R180), a Mini Bread Board with Cheese and Meats for 2 (R220), a Vegetarian Platter for 2 (R340) or a Harvest Platter for 2 (R340). Vegan platters available by prior arrangement.
Buitenverwachting Restaurants
Renowned chef Peter Tempelhoff’s latest restaurant venture beyond is unpretentious, uncomplicated and elegant: designed to celebrate the beauty of the ingredients without unnecessary embellishment.
This beautifully designed space includes an outdoor terrace overlooking the courtyard and water fountain, a stylish bar and contemporary dining room with magnificent views of the estate beyond.
Menus & Pricing
Expect seasonal, sustainable ingredients including rare-breed meats, heirloom vegetables and artisanally crafted cheeses, allowing you to experience natural flavours at their very best: simple and delicious.
Previous menu options have included Organic Beets and Burrata, Lobster Tempura, Roast Duck, Wild Mushroom Risotto, Kalahari Beef Fillet and Rum Braised Pineapple for dessert. Main courses at lunch start from approx. R200pp and dinner is a set R620pp, for 3 courses of your choice. The restaurant do occasionally run specials, please check their website for details.
Tours & Activities
Currently Buitenverwachting do not offer cellar or farm tours, however are hugely popular for events and weddings. Contact the estate for any group enquiries and they may be able to assist.
Buitenverwachting is also home to gift shop the STUDIO, curated with local artisan products and incorporating resident jewellery designers, maack & martin. The shop is open weekdays and design consultations are by appointment.
